Star of the Week: the Grizzly Bear


Scientific name: Ursus arctos horribilis

Habitat: mountains in Alaska, Canada, Idaho, Montana, Washington state, Wyoming, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the San Juan Mountains (in CO)*

Diet: carrion, fruit, young vegetation shoots, roots, bulbs, fish, larval and adult insects, the occasional elk calf or fawn, and sometimes marmots or other rodents**
Coloration: varies by location; ranges from white to almost black* or yellowish to reddish-brown (depends on what website you go to)**

Mating: breed in July. The gestation period is 26 weeks and the sow (female bear) usually gives birth to twin cubs in her winter den as she hibernates. Mother and cubs usually come out of the den in April or May. Females begin to breed when they are 3 1/2 yrs. old.
