American Peregrine Falcon


Scientific Name: Falco peregrinus anatum
Habitat: "open spaces usually associated with high cliffs and bluffs overlooking rivers and coasts"*
Diet: small rodents to medium sized birds*
Coloration: "a nearly black helmet, a dark slate-blue back and buff broken by horizontal bars on the underparts."*
Mating: Pairs mate for life and prefer nesting sites on high cliffs.* Nests are called scrapes and are not made with any materials like other bird nests.* The female lays 2-6 eggs and she incubates them for about 1 month.* When the chicks are 5-6 weeks old, they attempt flight for the first time.* "On avergae, two eyases successfully fledge per nest."*
Fun Facts: Adult falcons can be anywhere from 15-22 inches long with a wingspan of 43-46 inches.* Females are slightly larger than males and weigh 1 pound 14 oz. to 2 pounds 11 oz. Males weigh 1pound 7oz. on average.* "American peregrine falcons can swoop down on prey at speeds reaching 200 mph."*
