
Scientific Name: Lynx canadensis
Habitat: North America and Eurasia*; dense sub-alpine forest and willow-choked corridors along mountain streams and avalance chutes*
Diet: snowshoe hares, some carrion, ground-dwelling birds (i.e. grouse), and small mammals*
Coloration: a grayish coat with obscure spots, a small, black-tipped tail (~1/2 the length of the hind foot), and long, black ear tufts (which may be as long as the acutal ears)*
Mating: breeding occurs in late winter, with a litter of four kittens born in April or May after a gestation period of about nine weeks*
Fun Facts: The huge hind feet of the lynx allow this wild cat to be active year-round.* The paws act like snowshoes and help the animal move across the heavy snow.* The lynx is a little bigger than it's cousin, the bobcat.* Lynx are three feet long and weigh 20-30 pounds as adults.*
