Gray Wolf

Scientific Name: Canis lupis

Habitat: a wide range* - forests to plains and coast to coast

Diet: bison, elk and deer, with rabbits, rodents, and carrion to supplement*

Coloration: "pale gray washed with buff and overlain on the back and legs with black"*

Mating: Wolf dens are in banks and after a nine week gestation period, the female gives birth to 6-10 pups.* The male wolf provides food for the mother during the time she is nursing the pups.

Fun Facts: Wolves are members of the dog family and can be up to five feet long, 14" of which is a bushy tail.*
